Born in 1950, Carlos Victoria is a native of Camagüey, central Cuba. At age fifteen he won a national literary prize, but was later expelled from Havana University on grounds of "ideological deviation." In 1978, his manuscripts were confiscated, and two years later he emigrated to the United States during the Mariel boatlift. Author of several novels and short-story collections published in exile, he has become one of Cuba’s most honored writers and a favorite of Spanish-language audiences around the world.
