Cougar Woman
The Story of a Plains Woman Warrior
By Jane E. Hartman
A unique blend of thrilling history and fast-paced fiction, Cougar Woman recounts the trials and triumphs of a nineteenth-century Absaroke warrior and chief.
Captured at the age of ten, the fearless rider with the long black hair is keenly attuned to the forces of nature and to her adopted tribe's struggle for survival. Later guided by a vision quest, she finds the courage and wisdom needed to defend her rights, protect her people, and in time, become their leader.
"Historically exceptional . . . Cougar Woman makes the reader aware of one Indian woman as a leader and of all Indian women as part of our heritage of courage, pride, strength, and the innate ability to survive."
-Spiritual Frontiers
"A wonderful, well-told tale that should have broad appeal. . . . The book fills a niche that few storytellers cover, illustrating both a girl's growth into a warrior and the freedom allowed within the Native culture for each individual to choose his or her own path."
